Uncanny Thresholds, 2024
The home is a mirror of one's inner world and a haven to make sense of our experiences. However, when the boundaries of the place become blurred, this safe shelter transforms into an unsettling place. An emptiness and uncertainty arise within our inner world; the lines between the familiar and the strange, the inside and the outside become blurred, creating spiritual turmoil.
The city, as an extension of the home, is the realm of the modern unconscious. As I wander through the city's streets with this feeling, the repressed other side of the place reveals itself. The modern world offers a detached and objectified reality. What remains from this detachment is alienation and mental homelessness.
The places of Istanbul, where living becomes increasingly difficult, are turned upside down, and its people are left aimless. Intolerance, the anxiety of homelessness, the inability to move from one place to another, and not feeling safe even in one's own home combine to affect our lives. While wandering in an ever-changing and uncertain world, I symbolize the unsettling states I see during my search for my inner shelter.
